When I first heard that 7th Sea City of Five Sails was playable from a browser on a computer, phone, or tablet I didn’t know what to expect. In my experience, browser-based board game adaptations are hit or miss and often fail to faithfully capture the true tabletop gaming experience.
After making an account on Board Game Arena and playing my first game against Harold (Agent006), who served as the adaptation’s #1 playtester, I realized how misguided I was. While many browser-based adaptations manage to replicate the mechanics of their tabletops counterparts, they tend to be unintuitive and difficult to play. Many even make the experience of learning the game far more difficult than learning it at the table.
7th Sea City of Five Sails on Board Game Arena was an entirely different experience and demolished my previously low expectations. The board state was clearly readable, gameplay was snappy and intuitive, and the order of operations was handled so smoothly that misplays and missed opportunities were greatly reduced. Since my first game against Harold, I have played over 100 games of 7th Sea City of Five Sails on Board Game Arena and absolutely love the experience.
Board Game Arena allows you to challenge your friends to matches in your favorite board games and even has a matchmaking system that allows you to find new rivals to test your skills against. This has allowed me to play matches against other members of the design team as well as opponents from across the globe! There’s even a leaderboard where you can see how you rank in a particular game!
After experiencing the absolute magic the Board Game Arena adaptation had to offer, I simply had to know the identity of the architect behind it. As it turns out, the mastermind was none other than one of our own community members, Eddie Mittelstedt! Drawing on his epic programming skills, Eddie built the adaptation from the ground up as a passion project. Across two years of grit and determination, he brought the intrigue, swordplay, and adventure of Théah to one of the world’s leading online tabletop gaming platforms.
And now, we are thrilled to announce that 7th Sea City of Five Sails is moving out of beta status and will be officially released through Board Game Arena on Friday, November 6th 2026!
