At each World Championship Festival for 7th Sea: City of Five Sails, we are committed to player agency shaping the fate of the City. We want every player to have influence on the climactic events within Theah’s most interesting City. In this article, we will reveal this year’s three act story, facilitated by our Creative Director and Story Lead, Carmel Rechnitzer.
To Bell a Cat will take place between tournament rounds three, four, and five during swiss pairings on Saturday, August 3rd, following the format of last year’s Gen Con story, “An Eye for an Eye.” This year, none of the cards will have any mechanical effects that directly influence gameplay beyond the story.
Participants will receive these three cards at the beginning of the event, during registration. Each card will specify in which round it will be used and has a Chantey side and an Event side. Chantey is a special card type that our community will see almost exclusively at special events. Chantey cards are cards that help tell a story, and will most often feature a story introduction, followed by setup instructions. The Event side of this card behaves just like it would in the City Deck. While this card may have a different layout from the typical Event card, it will behave exactly the same as any other Event does.
The Devil Jonah’s Bones entered Five Sails as a result of the New in Town online league. Now that these dice are loose in the city, which faction will claim them? During round three, if you focus on holding the Docks, you can report that your faction seized The Devil Jonah’s Bones, and the faction that most reported taking them will claim them within the fiction as well!
At Gen Con 2023’s “For the Family” multiplayer salon, participants chose the lowly goon, Angelo, to have a redemption arc. A couple pieces of fiction have since featured Angelo and his internal moral struggle, but now, Angelo’s moment has come. During round four, by controlling the Forums at the end of the game while playing a faction other than Vodacce, you can report that your faction recruited Angelo and learns the secret of Dufort’s Murder. The faction that most reports recruiting Angelo will see him join their ranks as a Brute character in the upcoming Fate and Fortune expansion! Who knows what any one leader would do with the knowledge that the orchestrator of Dufort’s demise was the Don himself, with his son Servo making the killing stroke?
Unless, of course, more Vodacce players are successful in holding the Forums than any single faction. In which case, Angelo will be redeemed….. but will not survive.
After being blamed for Dufort’s murder, Soline el Gato has a target on their back, and is the most wanted person in the City. Like any good Scoundrel, they’ve got just one more heist to pull off before making a daring exit. During round five, by controlling the Bazaar while playing a faction other than Castille, you can report that your faction’s Leader foiled the heist and caught El Gato. The faction that most reports this should expect to see their leader in a scrap with Soline in upcoming fiction. If Castille players prevail in holding the Bazaar in round five, then El Gato will outwit and safely escape a Leader chosen by Castille’s Top of Faction player at Gen Con.

At 8am on August 3rd, during the registration period for the World Championship Salon, each faction will have their own Faction Community Conference. During this conference, participants will vote on which of their remaining leader options will be included in the Fate and Fortune expansion, Don’t miss this conference to ensure your voice is heard! (You do not need to participate in the World Championship Festival in order to participate in the faction conference and cast your vote, just bring a deck for your faction to show your loyalty!)
